As with the phone, you swipe on it rather than just pressing down (as on the iPhone 5s), but I found it worked pretty well. In most respects, it looks like a larger version of the company's flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, with a dimpled plastic back, metal edge, and a fingerprint reader embedded in the home button. I found it pretty easy to handle – it's not quite as compact as a 7-inch tablet, but I was able to snugly fit it in an inside coat pocket. And at just 8.38 by 4.24 by 0.26 inches, it's small for the screen size and very thin. The Tab S is also notable for its weight: just 294 grams, which makes it about 10 percent lighter than an iPad Air, and even a bit lighter than the smaller Nexus 7.
Overall, I'd say the screen is a big advantage, and the biggest differentiator for the Tab S. Reading a book looks like paper (although there is still something to be said for e-ink displays like the Kindle Paperwhite if all you want is something for reading black-and-white text in bright light, that's still far more visible than the Tabs S). I haven't found much to complain about with the displays on other high-end tablets, but this one really impressed me: It's certainly the best tablet display I've seen. I expected the display to be very sharp and bright, because of the OLED technology, but was also impressed that the colors looked particularly good. It has a 2,560-by-1,600 Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED) display, with 360 pixels per inch. The first thing that really stands out is the display. The Tab S is the top-end of Samsung's expanding tablet line (other than the 12.2-inch NotePRO, which I found to be too big and too heavy to travel with regularly), and comes in 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch versions I tried the 8.4-inch one. I've been looking forward to trying out the Galaxy Tab S since Samsung announced it last month, and after a couple of weeks of travelling with it I'm convinced: it's simply the best Android tablet I've seen to date.
